How to Style a Poncho
Brr… It’s getting chilly out! It’s the perfect time to break out your poncho. Ponchos are a funny thing. They look cute on the rack or on Pinterest, but for a lot of people, they have no idea how to style them. They aren’t quite a cardigan, and they aren’t a jacket...so what do you do?
Here’s 5 tips on styling your poncho, as well as some outfit inspo to get you in the mood!
Tip 1: Layers - Ponchos are great because they keep you warm and can look ultra chic, however you have to remember that ponchos aren’t sweaters or jackets. They often have openings that let cool air in, some have short sleeves and most are pretty baggy. The number one tip to styling a poncho is to work with layers. Ponchos look great over fitted long or short sleeve t-shirts paired with leggings or jeans.
Tip 2: Mix + Match - If your poncho is a plain color, pair it with a fun shirt underneath. Neutral ponchos look especially great with striped tops. If your poncho covered in a fun pattern, stick to a solid colored shirt underneath. Black, white and gray are always good solid color choices. Another fun way to dress up a poncho look is with fun patterned pants under a solid colored poncho.
Tip 3: Add a Scarf - Depending on the neckline of your poncho, it can be fun to add a scarf. Since ponchos are typically looser, opt for a tighter cowl or skinny scarf to complete the look. The same goes for scarves as with your undershirt. Pair neutral colored scarf with a bold patterned poncho, or a playful patterned scarf with a solid colored poncho.
Tip 4: Shoes - When you wear a poncho, often your torso is hidden. Dress up your outfit by adding fun shoes to a neutral ensemble! Jewel tones, leopard print and leather all add fun elements to the outfit.
Tip 5: Dress it Up or Dress it Down - Ponchos can be work in all sorts of ways, so don’t be afraid to try them all! A poncho will look super cozy with simple jeans and a long sleeve top, but they also look great with a dress or skirt. When dressing down your poncho, make sure that none of your other items are baggy. Ponchos look great paired with leggings or slim-fit jeans, but not with joggers.
